Poppies in the Garden

Red poppies crowd a garden path, heads heavy, stems swaying. Victor Borisov-Musatov built this scene from layered oil paint, petal by petal, until the flowerbed hums with color against a soft summer sky. Look closely and the brushwork tells the story: scarlet dabs over deep rose, green stems laid in with quick vertical strokes, a pale wash of light drifting across the background where the garden dissolves into haze. The paint sits thick in places, thin in others, giving the petals a real surface you can almost feel. Cool greens and violets frame the warm blooms, keeping the red from burning out. A sunroom or garden-facing study suits it well, somewhere morning light can meet all that red.
