Poplars by the Eure River

Tall poplars rise beside the Eure, their slim trunks cutting a vertical rhythm against the slow green water. Gustave Loiseau painted this riverbank scene with quick, layered strokes, his Post-Impressionist touch turning an ordinary bend in the river into something worth lingering over. Look at the water itself. It carries broken reflections of the trees, built from short dabs of olive, grey-green and pale sky. The far bank sits soft and hazy, while the foreground grass stays loose and textured. Light filters through the slender crowns, dappling the bank in flickers of ochre and silver. A calm, green-toned work for a living room, reading nook or hallway that wants the quiet of a French riverside without saying a word.
