Poplars by the Eau River

Tall poplars stand in a rank along the Eau, their trunks drawn in quick verticals against a wash of summer sky. Gustave Loiseau painted this riverside view with the small, rhythmic strokes that set him apart among the Post Impressionists. Look at the water. It carries broken reflections of green and violet, dabbed on thick so the surface trembles. The riverbank curves away in graded blues while foliage above clusters into dabs of emerald and sap green, each leaf a separate touch of the brush. Light falls soft and even, the way it does over the Norman countryside in late June. A quiet study, a hallway, or a reading corner with linen curtains would give these poplars room to breathe.
