Pont Neuf in the Snow

Snow settles over the Pont Neuf and the arcades behind it. Gustave Loiseau records a Paris morning when the Seine runs grey beneath white parapets and the traffic thins to footprints. Flurries streak diagonally across the stone arches, worked in short, loaded brushstrokes of lead white, pearl grey and cold blue. Loiseau, faithful to post impressionism, builds the river surface from horizontal dashes of violet and slate, while lamp posts and bare trees tick across the far quay in near black. The sky is barely distinguishable from the water. Hung in a hallway or above a writing desk, this winter city scene brings a quiet chill and calm to rooms that need a slower rhythm.
