Pont du Diable (St. Palais sur Mer Cliffs)

Cliffs of St. Palais sur Mer shoulder the sea in this Pont du Diable view by Theodor Pallady. Rock takes the foreground, water the rest. Ochre and rust mineral tones build the headland in loaded, directional strokes. Below, the Atlantic reads as slate green cut with white surf. The bridge of the title threads between the rock faces, its arches thin as pen lines. A low sky keeps the light cool and coastal.
