Pond in Abramtsevo

A still pond lies across the foreground, its surface holding reflections of birch trunks and open sky. Valentin Serov painted this corner of Abramtsevo with quiet, direct observation. Willows lean from the far bank. Grass runs to the water in short, confident strokes of green and ochre. Grey cloud softens the upper half, while the mirror of the pond doubles every tree in broken, darker tones. The brushwork stays loose where the light flickers, firmer along the shadowed bank.
