Polovtsian Camp

Steppe grass bends under horse hooves across the whole width of the canvas. Polovtsian camp gathers Nicholas Roerich riders and round yurts into one sweeping Eurasian scene. Russet tents cluster along a low ridge, smoke curling thin against a bone-pale sky. The palette runs in ochres, dusty greens and burnt sienna, laid in the flat, matte tempera handling Roerich favored. Figures on horseback pause at the camp edge, small against the enormous curvature of the land, and long shadows carve the ground into bands. A natural anchor for a hallway or study, especially beside maps or other Central Asian subjects.
