Polovtsian Camp

Round felt tents of the Polovtsian camp cluster on open steppe, smoke rising thin from cook fires. Nicholas Roerich paints the nomad encampment as a circle of earth tones under a pale sky. Look at the handling. Ochre hides, harness leather, and dung-brown wagons sit in loose crosshatched brushwork, while grazing horses dissolve into violet haze at the camp edge. A blue-grey horizon presses close, leaving no tree, no wall, only sky and grass. Made for a study or reading room, where its quiet steppe palette gives the eye distance and room to rest.
