Point Lobos, Oak Tree

An old oak leans hard away from the Pacific wind in Point Lobos, Oak Tree, a coastal subject by the Californian painter Guy Rose. The trunk twists like driftwood, bark built up in ridges of umber and grey. Foliage breaks into clotted dabs of moss and olive green, and behind it granite headlands drop toward water mixed from cobalt and milky salt haze. Sunlight lies flat on the dry grass. A subject like this suits a study or a hallway with wood floors and low evening light, where the cool sea air held in the paint quiets the whole room.
