Ploughland

Ploughed earth stretches to the horizon in Konstantin Somov's Ploughland, dark furrows running in long parallel bands beneath a wide, pale sky. The soil reads in burnt umber and cold violet shadow, each ridge catching a thin edge of light where the blade turned it. Above, thin cloud drifts across a wash of grey and soft rose, and the flatness of the field makes the sky feel enormous. Everything is quiet: no figures, no animals, just worked land breathing after rain. It belongs in a study or a reading nook, somewhere the eye can rest on open distance at the end of a long day.
