Plitnaia Hill

A steep wooded hill climbs toward a pale sky, its slope broken by low walls and clustered rooftops. Plitnaia Hill, painted by Nicholas Roerich, reads like a memory of old Rus, quiet and vertical. The tempera surface carries dry, chalky pigment in moss green, dusty violet and slate blue. Thin, deliberate contours trace every tree crown and gable. Clouds lie flat across the upper register, while the hill itself darkens toward the base, pulling the eye upward through layers of painted foliage. Roerich hillside scenes suit a study or reading nook, anywhere a slower, northern stillness belongs.
