Tents cluster on a high plain near Kuku Nor, the place where the Mahatmas camp. Nicholas Roerich records the site in tempera, the surface carrying his dry, luminous pigment like wind-scoured stone. Pale encampment shapes sit against a ground of cold violet and blue. Long shadows rake the plateau, crosshatching softens distant ridgelines, and a narrow path threads toward the horizon where the lake light gathers.
