Place de la Bastille

Paris traffic swirls around the July Column at the Place de la Bastille in this Gustave Loiseau city view. Carriages, carts and pedestrians cross the open square under a sky brushed in fast, broken strokes. Loiseau builds the pavement from flecks of grey, ochre and dull red, letting the wet street catch pale light between shadows. The column rises dark against soft clouds while facades recede in muted violet and green. A study, hallway or living room with an urban bent suits this Paris street scene well.
