Pitcher

A white ceramic pitcher stands on a crowded table, its rounded belly catching light from a window we never see. Pierre Bonnard built whole still lifes around objects this plain. He paints the glaze in thick cream strokes, letting violet shadow pool along one side. The tabletop tilts toward us, a Nabi habit, so the vessel seems to tip forward. At the edge, a lemon and a folded napkin wait. Loose crosshatching in cobalt and sienna builds the wall behind. In a sunlit kitchen or a quiet breakfast nook it belongs, wherever coffee steam and pale daylight keep the whole morning unhurried.
