Prickly pear pads stand shoulder to shoulder in this study by José Garnelo, each paddle outlined with a firm contour and shaded from olive into deep green. Garnelo was a Spanish academic painter with a precise, disciplined hand, and here that discipline shows in the way he models the succulent flesh, the clusters of spines set at regular intervals along every pad. Small magenta fruit punctuates the mass of green, giving the composition its only notes of warm color. The palette stays earthy and restrained, ochre and sap green against a muted ground. Suited to a kitchen, a breakfast nook, or any corner that wants a Spanish botanical note.
