Piros Tetős Házak

Rooftops in burning red step down a hillside in Piros Tetős Házak, Scheiber Hugó. The title says it plainly: houses with red roofs, painted by a Hungarian modernist who saw a village as geometry first. Look closely and the reds separate themselves, brick against vermilion against a sun-scoured orange, each slope given its own weight of pigment. Chimneys tilt at odd angles. Between the roofs run narrow wedges of shadow and pale wall, so the composition reads almost like folded cloth. The brushwork stays flat and deliberate, edges held firm, color doing all the work of depth. Hang it where light shifts through the day, a stairwell landing or a hallway that gets morning sun, and the reds will keep finding new heat.
