Pipkin with Mallows

A squat ceramic pipkin sits center stage, its glaze catching light along one shoulder while a loose bouquet of mallows spills over the rim. Constantin Artachino paints the humble vessel as if it were silver. The flowers carry it. Five-petaled blooms in dusty rose and faded mauve crowd the mouth of the pot, stems still green, a few leaves already curling. Behind them the ground darkens into deep umber and olive, so the pink heads seem to glow from within. Brushwork stays quick and loaded, the kind you find in Romanian still life of the early twentieth century, where a kitchen pot earns the same attention as a portrait. It belongs in a sunlit kitchen nook or above a farmhouse dresser.
