Pink Roses, Chinese Vase

Roses crowd the neck of a slender Chinese vase, petals opened wide and catching the light. Pink Roses, Chinese Vase belongs to the still life tradition of the Scottish Colourists. Peploe builds the arrangement from a handful of deliberate contrasts. The blooms sit heavy and pale against a deep ground, their blush tones pushed forward by shadow behind them. Leaves in cool green cut across the pink at angles, and the porcelain itself carries a blue and white patterned band, glaze holding crisp painted detail. Every brushstroke is visible, thick and set down in one pass. A reading nook or small study suits it well, somewhere quiet where the colour can carry the wall on its own.
