Pineta di Vareggio

Tall pines march along the coast at Vareggio, trunks drawn in quick dark verticals against a bright wash of Tyrrhenian sky. Galileo Chini catches the pinewood just inland from the beach, where the trees hold their ground a few steps from the sand. Look at how the canopy works: needles painted in dry, broken strokes of deep viridian and blue green, gaps opening to flashes of pale gold where sun gets through. Trunks lean and cross each other, their bark rendered in warm sienna with violet shadow along one edge. Beneath them the ground stays light, dune grasses and low shrubs sketched loosely, the sea implied by a thin band of blue at the horizon. A seaside study, a hallway with morning light, or a reading nook with linen and rattan would carry this well.
