Pine tree

A lone pine fills the view in Pine tree, Pyotr Konchalovsky rendering its furrowed bark and tangled boughs with the thick, loaded brushwork he took from Cézanne. The trunk leans at an angle, ridged in ochre and burnt umber where the paint sits heavy on the surface. Needles mass in dark viridian clusters, and pale sky breaks through the boughs in slabs of cool grey. Short, chiseled strokes give every branch weight. Suited to a study or library lined with books, where the resin-dark greens hold their own against aged wood and worn leather.
