Pine Cones

Two pine cones sit at the centre of this design, drawn by Charles Rennie Mackintosh with a botanist eye and a draughtsman hand. The Glasgow Style loved ordinary things and made them monumental. Mackintosh renders each scale as a stepped, geometric unit, the cones built up in pale washes against a muted ground. Fine pencil outlines hold the form while watercolor settles into the shadows, giving the surface a quiet, almost architectural solidity. Stems curve outward at the base in that attenuated, rose-like line he favored. A natural fit for a study, reading nook, or hallway where disciplined drawing and soft color can carry the wall on their own.
