A knight on horseback charges across the page, lance lowered, cape snapping behind him. Koloman Moser drew this picture book for the niece of Ditha Mautner von Markhof, turning a family keepsake into a small theater of Vienna Secession invention. Every figure is reduced to clean contour and flat pools of color. Stylized birds perch in trees built from simple arcs, borders of repeated blossom shapes frame each scene, and lettering curves through the margins like a decorative band. Ink line sits crisp against washes of gold, blue, and rose. Whimsy carries real graphic discipline here, the same balance Moser brought to his designs for glass and textile. A nursery, a reading nook, or a hallway shelf gives it the audience it was drawn for.
