Phlox on Track

Crowded phlox heads press toward the viewer, magenta and chalk white petals stacked in heavy clusters. Phlox on track by Pyotr Konchalovsky gives a common garden flower the weight of a grand still life. Oil sits thick across the surface, every petal built from a fat sweep of brushwork that keeps its ridge and direction. Foliage runs deep bottle green, broken by cool violet shadow, while the pale track beneath anchors the tumbling stems. Set above a sideboard in a dining room, or in a garden facing sunroom, the dense blooms hold their own against plain plaster and dark timber.
