Snow lies in deep ridges along the embankment steps, the granite column rising warm against a cold sky over the frozen Neva. Anna Ostroumova-Lebedeva records that hush in Petersburg. Rostral Column under the Snow. Grey and cobalt washes lay the winter sky in flat, even bands; bare paper does the work of fresh drifts along cornices and mooring posts. Fine dark linework picks out the carved ship prows stacked at the base, each edge rimmed white. A quiet study or entryway with north light suits it best. The pale palette breathes between bookshelves or above a narrow console table.
