Petersburg

Baroque domes and thin belvedere spires rise above a drowned horizon in Petersburg, the city view Mstislav Dobuzhinsky rendered as a stage set for imperial melancholy. His hand hovers between drawing and fantasy. Crosshatched stone facades recede in charcoal and dilute sepia, each cornice picked out with needle-fine ink lines. Water spreads flat as pewter under the skyline, and a pale grey sky presses down on the cupolas, leaving the whole sheet suspended between documentation and dream. Russian Symbolism at its most architectural. Hang it in a study or a dim hallway where low lamplight lets the crosshatching breathe.
