A canal slips between granite embankments, water rendered in long horizontal bands of cold grey-green. Petersburg. Kryukov Canal captures the city Anna Ostroumova-Lebedeva knew best, where architecture and water share one silhouette. Tall facades rise in muted violet and slate, their windows drawn with the crisp precision of woodcut line. Refined reflected in the canal, the buildings dissolve into wavering strokes of blue and umber. Bare trees along the embankment read as fine dark etching against pale sky. The whole sheet carries the restraint of northern light, nothing warm, nothing loud. A study or hallway gains a sense of depth from this cityscape, its cold Petersburg palette quieting any room it occupies.
