Rain-washed embankment stone runs along the Fontanka, its granite parapet darkened where canal spray has soaked into it for decades. Petersburg. Fontanka. by Anna Ostroumova-Lebedeva catches the city at its most unguarded hour. The water carries reflections in thin grey and green bands, broken by the wake of a small boat. Beyond the canal, facades rise in muted ochre and slate, their windows drawn with the fine hatching characteristic of the woodcut tradition. A bridge post cuts the composition at an angle, giving the water a sense of slow, heavy movement. A study or reading room with cool northern light suits this cityscape, where the drawing and the subject share the same restrained palette.
