Pesti Bérház

A Pest apartment house rises facade first, its windows ranked like ledgers, chimneys crowning the roofline. Scheiber Hugó builds the city block in oil on canvas, letting the tenement fill the frame edge to edge. Look at how the brush handles brick and plaster: blocks of ochre and slate stack against a slivered sky, smoke drifting past cornices drawn with quick dark lines. The geometry tightens toward the top, rooftops and gables cropping into angular silhouettes that owe much to constructivist draftsmanship. Every window catches a slightly different grey. Hung it where the light changes through the day, a hallway or home office with a view of real rooftops.
