Pessimism and Optimism

Two faces split the sheet in half: a gloomy profile droops on the left, its features dissolving into heavy black and violet hatching, while a bright countenance rises on the right in sweeping arcs of yellow and blue. Balla renders Pessimism and Optimism as opposing currents of line, each stroke carrying its own emotional weight. The dark side sinks in dense crosshatching that thickens toward the bottom; the light side opens outward in clean curves that read like wind or laughter. It belongs above a desk in a study or reading nook, where the contrast can be mulled over daily.
