Perseus

Perseus fills the sheet from edge to edge, plume and scabbard and the great curve of his sword all drawn in black ink against white paper. Beardsley renders the Greek hero as a decadent figure, more fashion plate than warrior, every contour reduced to line and flat black shape. The linework is the whole story: dense crosshatching builds the armor, a single unbroken contour traces the profile, and solid ink pools in the cloak and plume so the eye keeps moving between black and white. Nothing is shaded softly. Every surface is pattern, spine, and flourish, in the manner of the 1890s fin de siecle illustrators. A study wall, a hallway with good light, or a reading nook where graphic black and white can carry the room on its own.
