Peonies

Fat peony blooms bow under their own weight, petals loaded so thickly they seem scooped rather than brushed. Stefan Luchian painted flowers the way a sculptor models clay. Peonies shows why. Blush pink and ivory petals open against a shadowed ground, each highlight laid on in heavy impasto. A clear glass vase holds the stems, water catching thin ribbons of light, while leaves curl in olive and sage greens below. It belongs over an entryway console or in a dining room, anywhere that wants one deep, quiet note of garden bloom at close range.
