Pechora. Vestry

A low stone vestry huddles at the edge of Pechora, its timber roof weighted with slates and its small windows dark against the sky. Nicholas Roerich records it without ceremony. Muted greens and weathered greys carry the surface. Rough masonry reads stroke by stroke, each block laid in with a few decisive passes. Above the vestry, trees thin into a pale distance, and the paint thins with them until hill and air nearly merge. Quiet rooms suit it best: a study, a hallway, the corner of a reading nook where old northern architecture can hold the wall.
