Pears

Pears rest on a dark ground, their skins carrying the amber and olive glow that Julio Romero de Torres coaxed from oil paint like no other Spanish painter of his generation. Still life was never casual in his hands. Look closely and the fruit reads almost sculptural, each pear modeled in bruised gold and deep green shadow, highlights placed with the same precision he gave to the faces of Cordoba women. The background sinks into umber darkness, letting the pale bloom of the skin do the talking. A still life like this belongs where the light is low and thoughtful, a dining room sideboard, a study shelf, anywhere that rewards a second, slower look.
