Pears and Bowl

Pears crowd together in the foreground, their skins shifting from yellow ochre into bruised green and warm russet. Samuel Peploe sets them against the cool white of a glazed bowl, letting the fruit do all the talking. The bowl sits low on the table, its rim catching light along one curve. Brushwork stays tight and deliberate on the fruit, each pear built from short strokes of green and gold, while the background opens into loose planes of muted blue-grey. Shadows fall plainly, anchoring the arrangement. Suited to a kitchen, a breakfast nook, or a dining room where honest still life painting earns its place on the wall.
