Pavasaris

Snow lets go of the fields, and Purvitis paints the exact hour when Latvian spring arrives. Pavasaris, his beloved spring landscape, opens onto thawing ground and a sky already carrying the weight of new warmth. Look closely and the details multiply: brown earth cut by meltwater, pale water catching a washed-out sun, bare birches still dark against the horizon, and clouds pushed high and soft across a blue that has not fully decided on itself. Brushwork stays broad and wet, the way oil behaves when a painter works fast in changing light. Hung in a hallway or above a reading chair, it brings the promise of the first warm week indoors.
