Path

A narrow trail threads upward through Nicholas Roerich Path, cutting across bare foothills toward peaks that stay cold and blue at the horizon. The way itself is the subject, small against everything above it. Tempera laid in thin, dry strokes gives the ground its chalky grain, ochre and rust where the path catches low sun, grey-green scrub shading into violet distances. Snowfields above hold a pale, unbroken light. Roerich painted the Himalayas dozens of times, yet here the eye keeps returning to that single human thread of road, the one warm note in a composition of stone and altitude. Nothing moves in the picture except implied footsteps. A quiet fit for a study, a hallway, or any room that favors silence over ornament.
