A dirt track curves through green fields toward the red brick and pale stone houses of Saint Cyr Vaudreuil, a village tucked into the rolling country west of Paris. Gustave Loiseau paints the lane with thick, directional strokes of ochre and sap green, the kind of en plein air brushwork he learned at Pont Aven. Small white blossoms fleck the hedgerows. Above the rooftops, a pale sky moves in swift hatchings of grey and cream, and the shadows across the fields shift from violet to cold blue.
