Passing Schooner

A schooner heels across the harbor, sails full and dark against the water. Passing Schooner catches the exact moment when wind takes hold of canvas and the hull leans into its answer. Sloan draws with the loose, hooked line of an etcher who worked fast and looked harder. Ink pools in the rigging, crosshatching thickens along the shadowed side of the hull, and the wake trails off in a few confident strokes. Masts tilt, flags snap, small boats scatter at the edges of the sheet. Ashore, rooftops and piers sit in lighter gray, letting the vessel carry all the weight of the composition. Sail away in a study or reading nook.
