Part of Izvara Lake

Still water holds the far shore at Izvara, its surface rendered in long horizontal bands of slate blue and pewter grey. This lake scene comes from Nicholas Roerich, the Russian painter whose landscapes treat northern nature as sacred ground. Low hills recede in violet and blue-green layers, each ridge softened until sky and water nearly merge. The brushwork is smooth, almost tempera-like, giving the water a stillness broken only by a pale reflection near the bank. Rooftops or a small settlement sit low at the waterline, dwarfed by open sky. A quiet corner of a study or reading room suits this contemplative northern landscape, where its cool palette rewards long, unhurried looking.
