Parkban 1917, Olaj, Papírlemez, 68x96cm

Figures wander a tree-lined path in Parkban, the 1917 park scene Scheiber Hugó built up in oil on paperboard, summer green pressing close around them. Trunks rise as dark verticals through broken strokes of sap green and olive, the cardboard ground giving the oil a matte, chalky tooth. Leaf clusters flick between emerald and citron, a bench waits in the shade, and strollers register as flattened silhouettes, one coat of red pulling the eye. Hungarian post-impressionism of this scale suits a hallway or dining room, anywhere the dense green reads well against plain plaster and low evening light.
