Paris Wagram Avenue

A wide Paris avenue stretches uphill under a heavy grey sky, carriages and early motorcars trailing dust between the plane trees. Gustave Loiseau painted Wagram Avenue with the restless brushwork of the post impressionists, building the boulevard out of short, jostling strokes. Look at how the pavement is handled: mauve shadow where the trees throw their lines across the asphalt, pale ochre where sunlight breaks through. Facades rise in muted rose and buff, windows reduced to dark flecks. The crowds dissolve into dabs of black, red and blue, each figure a flick of the wrist. It belongs in a hallway or stairwell, somewhere the eye travels, echoing the avenue pulling you up and out of frame.
