Paris. Azaleas in a Pot

Azaleas spill past the rim of a glazed pot, bloom crowded against bloom, pink over deep green. Pyotr Konchalovsky titled the still life for Paris, and the light reads cool and even. Heavy impasto builds each flower head, rose and magenta strokes dragged wet over darker underpaint. The vessel stands on a stone sill, viridian foliage massed behind it, shadow running violet toward cobalt. Nothing is smoothed; every surface keeps the drag of the bristle. A sunlit breakfast room, a stair landing, a reading nook thick with houseplants: anywhere real daylight can bring the color up to full strength.
