Grey warships lie hull behind hull in long review lines over a flat northern sea. Ivan Vladimirov sets Parade of the Navy. Imperial yacht Standart at the centre of the anchorage, white and immaculate among the gunmetal. The yacht rides low and white at the head of the line, signal flags climbing her halyards while a steam launch drags a bright wake across the reflection. Saluting guns roll their thunder; black coal smoke drifts out to sea. A study, a hallway beside maps and charts, or a library with dark shelves gives those cold blues and whites room to breathe like sea air.
