Palms

Fronds fan against a pale sky in Palms, a California subject from Guy Rose. The trunks lean at slight angles, their bark worked in quick strokes of grey and violet. Rose built the canopy in layered greens, olive deepening to emerald where the light catches. Dabs of cream and lemon break through the leaves, suggesting sun filtering from above. The brushwork stays loose and broken, in the manner of French plein air painting he absorbed at Giverny, yet the subject remains unmistakably southern Californian. A sunroom, screened porch, or bright hallway with pale walls suits its airy palette well.
