Palm Trees

Palms crowd the foreground, fronds cut dark against a sky that Bogaevsky pushes toward an unnatural glow. This is Palm trees, a view of the Crimean south shore as he alone saw it. The trunks lean and knot, rendered in dusky umber and burnt sienna with visible, almost etched brushwork. Beyond them the mountains of Koktebel dissolve into violet haze, and the fronds catch a strange, mineral light, somewhere between green and cold gold. The palette hums with that eerie luminescence the painter built his whole reputation on. A sunroom or warm-toned study suits it, anywhere the light shifts through the day and the fronds seem to move with it.
