About this work

Palm Trees, Antibes

Palms lean across the picture plane in Palm Trees, Antibes, their fronds cut into flat, decisive strokes of green against a sky pushed almost to white. Samuel Peploe built the Riviera out of hard edges and clear color. The trunks rise in wiry dark lines, bent by the famous mistral, while the ground below burns with terracotta and ochre laid on thick. Shadows sit as solid slabs of violet and cobalt, the sea a band of unmodulated blue beyond the wall. Nothing is blended; every shape is declared. Sunlit and architectural, it belongs in a bright hallway or above a pale linen sofa where the color can carry the room.
