Overlooking the Huangpu River

Barges and sampans cross a broad, slow tide in Overlooking the Huangpu River, a view by Fujishima Takeji of a working port waking under morning haze. The painter builds the scene in Western-style oil, loading the brush along hulls and mooring posts while the water lies flat, a sheet of pewter grey streaked with olive and dusty blue. Funnels trail smoke into a milky sky, warehouses and mast tips shading the far bank.
