Birches stand white against a summer sky. Outdoors by Arkady Rylov opens onto a Russian meadow at the height of the growing season, grass and trunks rendered in loose, breathing brushwork. Look at how the paint moves: short dabs of chrome green where the meadow thickens, pale birch bark built from cool greys and one warm slash of shadow, a sky laid in broad horizontal strokes that keep their own direction. The sun sits somewhere behind the painter, so every leaf edge catches light. It belongs in a bright reading nook or a sunroom, anywhere morning light keeps the greens honest.
