Out to Sea

Sailboats heel across open water in Out to Sea, a marine canvas by California impressionist Guy Rose. White sails catch a hard afternoon light while the hulls cut toward a horizon where sky and ocean nearly merge. Rose worked in broken brushstrokes of cobalt, cerulean and sun-bleached violet, letting the paint sit thick along each sail and thin across the swells. The water carries deep ultramarine shadows beneath wind-lifted crests, and the small fleet leans in formation, drawn from his years painting the Normandy coast and the Pacific shore alike. Suited to a coastal living room, a study with sea views, or a hallway that needs salt air.
