Our Home in Fort Washington Pennsylvania

A clapboard house sits under a wide Pennsylvania sky, its windows and porch rendered in the loose, affectionate brushwork of John French Sloan. The picture is titled Our Home in Fort Washington, Pennsylvania. Greens and warm ochres carry the yard, while the roofline tilts slightly, drawn the way a resident sees it rather than a surveyor. Sloan layers olive, sap green, and sunbaked tan over quick dark strokes for shutters and tree trunks. Light falls unevenly across the lawn, the kind of afternoon light that shifts while you watch. Every mark feels lived in, from the shaded doorway to the pale wash of sky behind the chimney. It belongs in a hallway, a country kitchen, or a reading nook where family photographs already gather.
